SOCIETY OF ARTS

ACTIVITIES DURING YEAR INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP T " The year has been characterised by a gradual expansion of the society's activities," states the 51st annual report of the Auckland Society of Arts, to be presented at the annual meeting of the society on Tuesday evening. Membership had increased by 45, the report added, and now stood at a total of 428, comprising 25 life members, 268 honorary members, and 135 working members. Much of the work exhibited at the annual exhibition this year followed present day tendencies in the older countries, and the council felt it should endeavour to present annually some work indicating developments abroad. The financial results of the exhibition were satisfactory, expenditure having been reduced to a minimum.

With a view to giving all members an opportunity of having work shown, it had been decided to hold a special spring exhibition in October. The A. Kohn medal for the most distinctive work sent in had been won by Miss Blanche Hazlewood for a crayon drawing. Some fine posters had been displayed at the exhibition of Empire Marketing Board posters, kindly presented by Lord Bledisloe. The first award of the Bledisloe Landscape Medal had been made to Mr. Archibald F. Nicoll, of Christchurch, for Ihis landscape, " Ashley Downs." The arts ball had been particularly successful, and, as a result, the picture purchase fund, from which the periodical donations of pictures to the Auckland' City Council were financed, had profited to the extent of £6O.

Regret is expressed that Dr. E. B. Gunson, after four years' presidency of the society, does not intend seeking reelection, and also that Mr. R. 0. Gross, a member of the council, had left Auckland. The balance-sheet shows a surplus of income over expenditure for the year of £ll4, excluding £6O profits from the arts ball, transferred -to the picture purchase fund. ~ The agenda of the meeting InAudes a motion to amend the rules with a view to enabling the society to hold art unions.
