FLOCK HOUSE BOYS
I VACANCIES PJOT FILLED j •; ■ ' POOR RESPONSE IN AUCKLAND Astonishment was expressed by several members of tho Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association executive, yesterday at the poor response made to the advertisements for boys to receive training at Flock House. Only 11 applications were received throughout the province to fill .19 vacancies. The training is offered to sons of soldiers and ex-soldiers who have been ill or wounded. Mr. A. G. Lunn , said it was a very remarkable thing that they should have only 11 applications after advertising throughout the province. He could not understand why they did not have 60 or 70 ready to accept the chance.
Sir Georgo Richardson suggested that the sons of soldiers who married after returning ,from the war would be too young to take advantage of the scheme. Mr. Lunn pointed out that many men were married before they went to the war. The report, which the executive adopted, stated that len eligible boys had been accepted as trainees at Flock House. Of this number, eight had already been sent to Flock House and the remaining two had been granted permission to sit for their proficiency certificates in December and would proceed to Flock House after the examination. One application for admission as a trainee was at present receiving the consideration of the Flock House trustees. The board granted each successful applicant £l(3 for provision of outfit and paid the fees for. medical examinations and the railway fare to Marton. A report from the central committee states that 60 trainees are required every eight months —which is the training period—and that 54 boys will have entered Flock House by September 30, while 17 more aro provided for.
