BANDITS' CAPTIVES

EFFORTS FOR RELEASE OFFICIAL BRITISH ACTION SHANGHAI, Sept. 21 The Brit : sh Consul-General at' Mukden, Manchuria, Mr. A. E. Eastes, is negotiating with General Muto, Japanese Com-mander-in-Chief in Manchukuo, concerning tho release of Mrs. M. Pawley and Mr. C. Corkran, the British subjects kidnapped by bandits. Mr. Eastes has asked the Japanese military authorities to guarantee the bandits immunity on condition that they released the captives. Ho has also asked the Japanese to refrain from obstructing the Chinese intermediary, who at present is in touch with the bandit gang. General Muto has replied that the question of immunity needs consideration, but he promises to urge Manchukuo not to interfere with the Chinese intermediary.
