CHARGE OF FRAUD
MEDALS COATED WITH GOLD ALLEGATIONS BY POLICE [BY TELEGRAMS OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday The sale of medals with an imitation 18,-carat stamp on them was alleged against Norris Blaxall, aged 39, a jewelIqr, of Wellington, when lie appeared before Mr. E. S. Mosley, S.M., in tho Police Court to-day. He was charged with obtaining a cheque for £4 7s 6d from G. H. Madden, by a false pretence, and he was I remanded until Tuesday, on bail of £2OO ( and two sureties of £IOO. Suppression of ■, his name was refused. J The chief detective said that accused j was a working jeweller in Wellington, and had got tho idea of making easy money. He 4 had . gone round - the Christchurch jewellers and gold buyers selling alleged j gold medals, which really only had a thin 1 Coating of gold. The estimated value of gold Was 25s in each medal, but accused , had sold five or six of them for prices j up to £6. The medals were made and en- j graved by accused, and had an imitation ( 18-carat stamp on tlicm. There was soino j. cheap metal inside. There was reason to helieve that Christ- j church was not the only place whero the c medals had been disposed of, continued g tho chief defective, and a remand would } j bo necessary to make inquiries.
