AFFAIRS OF THE CITY

LOCAL BILL DRAFTED STATION SITE LOAN A draft of a, local empowering bill, to be promoted during the present session of Parliament, was submitted to the City Council last evening by the Logal and By-laws Committee. The bill authorised the council to raise a special loan not exceeding £25.000 for the purchase of land and provision of roading access to the old Auckland railway station site; to take over certain private streets at Avondale; to control the affairs of certain domains as a council, without holding special meetings as a domain board; to adopt, at local elections and polls, the system of voting by a cross; to lease the site of the Seddon Memorial Technical College as a whole to the Auckland Education Board, at a nominal rental without offering the lease to public auction or tender. It was resolved to permit parking in side roads in the Domain, but to .prohibit it in the two main drives, and to frame a by-law making it an offence to halt vehicles in' the lower drive from Stanley Street except on account of accident. An objection to unsightly structures upon the city footpaths, especially at the intersection of Queen and Customs Streets, was received from the City Central Progress League... The city engineer reported that the tramway despatch office and switching station at the Customs Street intersection had both been in use since the days of the Auckland Tramway Company. The switching station had lately been raised considerably, but occupied no more ground than before. Shops behind the structures probably suffered some detriment from their presence. He considered that future structures should be on pillars, like the switch-box at the Wellesley Street intersection. The letter was referred to the Works Committee, with a view to a conference with the Transport Board. A sum of £SO was voted to the Auckland Boys' Employment Committee, which had appealed to the council for financial assistance. Ifc was agreed to allow the committee the use of the Town Hall at a reduced charge for an entertainment.
