VICTORIA ARCADE
REVERSION TO THE CITY PROPOSALS FOR MODERNISING Suggested steps for the modernising of the Victoria Arcade when the ground lease expires a year hence were submitted to the City Council last evening. The building, which was erected between 40 and 50 years ago, stands upon a municipal leasehold and reverts to the council without compensation to the lessees. Tlie property committee reported that it had received inquiries by and on behalf of several of the tenants, who wished to know the council's intentions regarding the continuance of their leases. The committee recommended that Auckland architects be invited to submit competitive plans and specifications embodying proposals which they considered might be carried out to modernise the Victoria Arcade Building, and that a prize of £lO5 be offered for the proposal which the council considered the most suitable, the amount to be deducted from the architects' fees if the work was proceeded with.
It was also proposed to notify tenants that the council's present intention was not to disturb the existing tenancies except so far as modernisation of the building might make it necessary. When the committee's report came up for adoption, the chairman, Mr. D. Henry, moved that the clause in question be referred back for further consideration. This was agreed to.
