CANADIAN SCANDAL
KING'S COUNSEL CHARGED SUFFERING FROM CANCER WINNIPEG, Sept. 13 John Machray, K.C., who is suffering from cancer, made liis first appearance in tho dock of the Polico Court to-day when he was charged with stealing £180,200 — the largest amount ever mentioned in a theft charge against one individual in a Canadian Court. The money is missing from the funds of tho University of Manitoba, of which Machray was bursar. As the chief lay executive of the Anglican Church of Western Canada, he is also accused of being responsible for shortages totalling £200,000. Literally he has not a penny left. Tho formal prosecution may be proceeded with, but the doctors give accused only three months to live. Several old friends attended the feeble, haggard bid man whose colossal deception lias wrecked the finances of two institutions.
