MANUKAU COUNTY
JVORK.UNDER NO. 5 SCHEME The Manufcau County Council met yesterday morning, the chairman, Mr. F. M. Waters, presiding. The engineer, Mr. J. R. Tage, 'reported that operations tinder No. 5 scheme had been continued generally, the average numbers of men through the .various districts being as follows:—Papatoetoe, 87: Papakura, 74; Mangere, 64; Wairou, 30; Turanga, 19; Wiri Drainage Board, 13; Pakuranga, 9; and county office. 2. The services of the men had been utilised in road and footpath construction and improvements, drainage, clearing school grounds, quarrying scoria and also in clearing private lands under the usual financial arrangements. The works in connection with the water supply at Mangere were stated to be progressing satisfactorily, and water was available for use earlier than was anticipated. The 30 miles of mains had, with small exceptions, been laid and tested. Permits involving £2422 were issued by the building inspector. In response to a request from the Auckland Boys' Employment Committee for financial assistance, it was decided to donate £lO 10s. A letter was received from the Manu-rewa-Manukau Unemployed Workers' Movement requesting the council's assistance in urging the Unemployment Board to abolish the stand-down week. The council decided to support the movement.
