CITY RELIEF SCHEMES

Sir—Tim proposal to expend £40,000 in converting the rocky area in the vicinity of the Stone Jug on tho Great IN oil 1 1 Road into a golf links, and thus discover ] another means of stilling the clamour for relief labour within the city, seems to be j the last word in wasting the hard-earned contributions of tho public under the terms of the Unemployment Amendment Act, 1931. Tho N situation is convenient, and (hat is the sole argument in favour of the proposal. Surely some work that will be of benefit to the city and country generally can be found. Far too much has already been spent oil sports grounds, playing areas, footpaths and the like. Works of that nature are now becoming scarcer, hence the present proposal, which will engage an army of men for many months. Anyhow, to use such a central area for golf purposes is altogether wrong. In such a situation, a breathing space for the people is what is wanted. There are already many golf courses around the city. The council should afford tho professional public or even the general public an opportunity of submitting schemes for the profitable employment of relief workers in and around tho city. This would result in some schemo of a really useful nature being discovered. Anyone with any knowledge of economics can say bora and now that the present methods lead nowhere, spoil the workers, and will very soon bleed the country dry. Patriot.
