GOLD MINE IDLE
TROUBLE AT WAIHI STOP-WORK MEETING HELD DISMISSAL OF ELDERLY MEN [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WAIHI, Monday No work was done at the Waihi Gold Mining Company's mine or battery to-day owing to a stop-work meeting of the men, and the mine will not reopen until Wednesday night. Following a recent special meeting of miners to consider the company's action in notifying a number of elderly employees that their engagements would be terminated on September 17, the Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries Employees' Union notified the company that unless representatives were appointed to confer with the union on the matter before the dismissals took effect a stop-work meeting would be held to-day to consider the position further. The company refused the request and at the same time notified the union that if the men ceased work to-day the mine and the battery would not be reopened midnight on Wednesday. The stop-work meeting was held this morning, the president of the union, Mr. E. Dye, presiding over an attendance of about 500 members. The meeting was not open to the press, but at the close the president reported that the following resolution had been carried:—" That the matter be referred to the Conciliation Commissioner to arrange a conference between the company and the Miners' Union. In the meantime the men to return to work when the mine and battery reopen at midnight on Wednesday."
