QUEST FOR GOLD

WHERE MINERS DO WELL ACTIVITY IN NELSON AREAS In the course of some remarks in Duned'in this week on the outlook of goldmining, the under-sccretary of the Mines Department, Mr. A. H. Kimbell, said that in one mining area in the Nelson district 150 men wore working in a small river area without 'receiving any assistance from the Unemployment Board or the Mining Department, and some of these men were doing quite well. Within a mile or two of this locality the Mining Department had launched a scheme, for which 100 specially recommended men had been sent from Wellington. They had established a comfortable camp by their own labours, and stores had been erected to cater for their needs. They wero now putting in their tail races, and in a few weeks would be busily engaged in sluicing their claims, oji each of which there were two men. As an indication of the extent to which gold prospecting was now boing carried out, Mr. Kimbell stated that in July over 700 prospectors throughout the country sold gold to licensed gold dealers, the average per man being about £lO. He felt confident that if tho auriferous areas wero roliably and extensively tested by efficient methods tho mining industry would bo placed on a much better basis than it had been in recent years and a much larger yield of gold would bo won.
