( AMENDING REGULATIONS

SPORT IN AUCKLAND PROVINCE

BAIT FOR VARIOUS STREAMS

Amending regulations governing trout fishing in the Auckland acclimatisation district have been published in the Gazette. One of these increases from 10 to 12 inches the limit of measurement of trout that must be immediately returned alive to the water with as little damage as possible. From October 1, 1932, io September 30, 1933, no person is permitted to take trout by any means whatsoever in that portion of tho Wanganui River between the Matapuna railway bridge and the Victory Bridge at Taumarunui, nor in that portion of tho Waipa River between tho pit of the Otorohanga Gravel Company, Limited, and the eastern boundary of tho Meadowlands farm main drain, nor during tho period from October 1, 1932, to September 30, 1934, in the Little Puriri, Omahine, Rapa Rapa and Kauaeranga streams.

No person is allowed to use as bait any shellfish, fish-ova, koura, houhou, or matai grub, 0 r earthworms, or any bait or lure other than natural or artificial fly, or natural or artificial minnow, or any small indigenous fish, insect, grasshopper, beetle or spider. This general rule is qualified by a number of specific regulations made for various rivers.

Natural or artificial fly only is permitted on the Oraka, Mangakahu, Maungatawliiri, South Wairoa, Waimiha and Oamaru rivers, the Ongarue River between its source and the Waimiha railway station, the Waihou River between its source and the Oxford bridge on the Tirau-Rotorua Road, Mount Moakurarua Stream, between its sourco and its junction with the Oamaru River, Hay's Creek (Hunua Gorge Creek), and the Ararimu Creek.

Artificial fly only is permitted on tributaries of the Waipa River, the Puniu River between its junctions with the Wairaka and Waipara Rivers, Waimakariri, Waiomou, Little Waipa, Pokaiwhenua and ■Mangalangi Rivers. For the Awakino Stream and in the Waipa River upstream from the Pirongia bridge artificial fly, artificial minnow or spoon bait alone are specified. Artificial fly or spoon bait only are permitted on the Waikato River between the Arapuni dam and Horahora. Natural or artificial fly, or natural or artificial minnow, or ■ spoon bait alone are permitted on the Ongarue River below the Waimiha railway station. In Lake Arapuni from a point 80 chains above the dam to the spillway the bait specified is artificial fly other than spinning fly. In the remainder of Lake Arapuni the bait is natural or artificial fly, artificial minnow, or some form of spoon bait, any of which baits or lures shall not be of a greater length than 2£in. New regulations for the Wellington acclimatisation district prohibit any person from taking more than 15 trout in one day, and provide that no person shall fish for trout, perch or other acclimatised fish in the upper reaches of the Waikanao River and its tributaries from its junction with the Ngatiawa River.
