WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Aranga. —A demonstration of glovemaking was given by Mrs. Thomas, and a talk on papier-mache was given by Miss Keene, of Omana. A memory test competition y?as won by Miss Bramble. The first institute baby, Master Gerald Bradley, receivad a small gift.' Buckland.—The first meeting of the institute was held in the local pavilion, when Mrs. Stuart, of Henderson, voluntary organiser, gave an interesting address on the history, work and ideals of the institute movement. Mrs. Stuart exhibited a beautiful rug made from old silk stockings. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames Harper, Stevenson, Graham and Walker. Mercury Bay.—At the invitation of the institute-, a social reunion of returned soldiers was held at Whitianga. About 30 returned men, including Imperialists, Guardsmen and Boer War veterans, were present, and it was decided to form a branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. F. A. Stevens; secretary, Mr. T. Cannon; treasurer, Mr. F. A. Stevens; executive, Messrs. C. A. Wells, W Oxley, A. Morley, A. Simpson, E. Noble and John Hamilton. It was decided to hold an annual parade and plant an avenue of trees. Cards, songs and stories filled in a.pleasant evening.

Ngntea.—Mrs. Dudding was elected delegate to attend the council meeting to be held in Auckland in October. A lecture oil "Health, and Diet" was given by Madame Milne. The hostesses were Mrs. Molloy, Mrs. Mcintosh, Mrs. King. Mrs. J. Leonard and Mrs. Joliansen. Omokoroa. —At the monthly meeting of the institute eight new member were enrolled. A demonstration was given by Mrs. Duxfield. The roll-call, Home Remedies," brought forth many helpful suggestions. Hostesses for the afternoon were:—Mrs. Gamman, Mrs. Lauder and Mrs. McClinchie. Opotiki. —The fourth birthday was celebrated with a banquet. An enjoyable programme comprising musical items and a sketch was presented. Mrs. Coopci, the new president, bade farewell to the re: tiring president, Mrs. Wagner, on behalf of the members. l'aengaroa. —A demonstration of dress making was given by Mrs. G. Mends. The hostesses were Mrs. Stokes. Mrs. Macdonald and Mrs. McKen/.ie. Itcwiti.—Mrs. L Kerr-Taylor and Mrs. S. Brasington were appointed delegates to the Auckland conference, and Mrs. R. Matheson was nominated candidate for the executive of the Auckland Federation: A demonstration of pastry-making was given by Mrs. L. Kerr-1 aylor. Ruawai.—A talk and demonstration on first-aid work was given by Mrs. A. F. Wallace. A competition for the best pat ol home-made butter was won by Mrs Craven with Mrs. W. Woodhill.—An enjoyable entertainmen followed by a danco was organised by th institute and held in the local hall. Mis L. Quarrie was presented with a bouque from the institute members in apprecia tion of her services in coaching those whi contributed to the programme.
