GANDHI'S INTENTION THREAT OF SUICIDE EFFORT TO INTERVENE ASSEMBLY UNSYMPATHETIC By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received September 15, 6.35 p.m.) CALCUTTA, Sept. 15 Orthodox Hindus, profoundly, moved by Gandhi's threat to starve himself to death, as it was expected they would be, are making desperate efforts to save him from suicide. Maridit. Malaviya, a prominent Hindu leader, lias appealed to bis' community and the depressed' classes to meet at Delhi at the week-end to end.eavour to reach an agreement on the depressed clashes' 'electorates issue. Although his suggestion is generally welcomed the leaders of the principal sections of the depressed classes are not enthusiastic abo\it a conference and demand to know Gandhi's alternative proposals for their future representation. Gandhi's threat was the subject of a lively debate in the Indian Assembly. A Hindu Nationalist fiercely attacked the Government for the " segregation " of the depressed classes from the caste of the Hindus by granting the former separate electorates. Otlior Indian members, however, showed little sympathy with Gandhi's gesture. The Calcutta Statesman states that if Gandhi chooses to die he will not. die as a hero, but to prevent a larger freedom for millions of people, whose wrongs have stirred the imagination of the entire world.
