SUBSIDENCE OF LINE
MEN BUSY ON REPAIRS COMPLETION POSSIBLE TO-DAY [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTON NORTH. Thursday Work is proceeding very satisfactorily at the scene of the subsidence of the railway line near Kopua, but restoration of the line could not be effected to-day, and traffic was consequently delayed again. Th» work should bo finished to-morrow. There are 100 men on the job. Although no official explanation has been made, the theory of residents is that the old approach has been undermined by the diversion of a spring, which since the February earthquake last year has been flowing at a much-diminished volume. The subsidence is fairly considerable, being about 90 feet long and 40 feet deep.
