COUNTRY RELIEF WORK
Sir,—ln Wednesday's Herald there appeared the new conditions for No. 5 scheme, to operate in the country after three weeks from now. The board states that this is to bring country relief workers on a par with those in the four main centres. I have worked in two country districts and at present am under the Matanata committee. Under the Act I am entitled to four days a week for three, weeke, with a stand-down week. The last two weeks I have .worked there has been only three days each week allotted to mo. I have to provide my own transport, the work being nine miles from my house. I also have to travel eight miles to find out which job I will be on and how many days. The secretary informed me that there is only £6O allotted for 40 men next week. We receive no cheap meat or other concessions enjoyed by city workers. Will conditions be altered when the new rules operate, or must we suffer the present injustice? The extra hours mean more travelling expenses. Trusting we may be at par in three weeks' time.
