OBITUARY

MR, ALFRED MILNER The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. Alfred Milner, a well-known and highlyrespected resident of Manurewa for the last 20 years, at the age of 94. Mr. Milner was born at Caerwent, Newport, Monmouthshire, in 1838. When about seven years of age, his family migrated to America. Eventually Mr. Milner went to sea, and at one time, about 1880, made a trip to New Zealand from England. At the conclusion of his seafaring career 35 years ago, he came to live in New Zealand and settled near Napier, where he engaged in sheep-farming. Later he removed to Silverdale and Birkdale, where he bought a small farm. In 1912 Mr. Milner came <o Manurewa. He has no relatives in New Zealand. MR. ROBERT GARROWAY The death occurred at Takapuna on Sunday of Mr. Robert Garroway, aged 83. Mr. Garroway was born within a few miles of the City of Glasgow, and as a youth started in the drapery business. Very early, however, lie joined the service of a tea and sugar merchant, of whose branch at Greenock he became manager. Eventually he entered on his own account into the wholesale tea and sugar business in Glasgow and built up his establishment to large proportions. About 1902 he camo to New Zealand, but before doing so ho had placed his business in the form of a limited liability company, in which his employees held large interests, while he himself remained the principal shareholder In 1927 the jubilee of the establishment, was celebrated, it being by this time one of the largest concerns of its kind in Glasgow. Since his arrival in New Zealand Mr. Garroway had been largely interested in private land settlement and drainage schemes in the Waikato and other districts. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Garroway made their home at Takapuna, in a charming residence overlooking the Rangitoto Channel. Mr. Garroway, is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter.

MRS. L. S. S. WIIICHELLO The death has occurred at Russell of Mrs. Louisa Sophia Stuart Whichello, at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Whichello, who was born at Dundalk, Ireland, went to Australia with her parents when she was 13 years of age. Dr. Carr-Boyd, her father, became principal of the Grammar School, ITobart, but after some years, on account of his health, he went to Queensland, where he was appointed commissioner of Crown lands for Queensland. A brother of Mrs. Whichello, Mr. William Carr-Boyd, was a well-known early explorer of the interior of Australia. Mrs. Whichello is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Austin Henderson, of Wellington, and Mrs. Chesson, wife of Dr. Herbert Chesson, formerly of the Department of Health. Mrs. Whichello, who lived with Dr. and Mrs. Chesson, had a large circle of friends in Auckland and Christchurch.
