HEAVY FALL OF SNOW

STORM AT NATIONAL ' PARK CONDITIONS NOW NORMAL [BY TELEGEAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] THE CHATEAU, Sunday A severe snowstorm was experienced at the Chateau all day yesterday. Preparations were made in readiness for a blizzard, but fortunately the wind died down and toward dusk the fall ceased. The fall was particularly heavy on the mountain and on the ski-ing grounds. Owing to the wet nature of the ground, however, the snow scon melted and the to-day were again normal. On Friday a party of about 40 set out to climb Tongariro, but owing to the condition of the ice and the fact that the party had only one ice-axe, it was found practically impossible to travel any distance, and the party was forced to return. Perfect weather to-day compensated for that of yesterday, and the conditions are now ideal for winter sports. There are prospects of excellent snow conditions for the coming week. More guests are staying at the Chateau after the completion of the winter sports this year than for many years past, the number being 140.
