GOLF CONTESTS

SOUTH AUCKLAND TITLE | SUCCESS OF J. L. BLACK EASY WIN IN THE FINAL Tie South Auckland golf clinmpiorislnp wns concluded ut St. Andrews links, Hamilton, on Saturday, when J. L. Black defeated W. Wynne, 7 up and G in the final. This is the third successive occasion on which Black has won tho title. The semifinals wero played in tho morning, when Black beat A. Fisher, 1 up, and Wynne beat W. S. lialph, 1 up, all pluyers with the exception of Ralph being members of the Hamilton Club. Tho weather was cold and boisterous, with heavy westerly rain squalls sweeping the unsheltered country and making play at times vory difficult. Prior to tho final. Black had not been hitting his shots nicely, although his figures wero good, but in tho final he immediately struck form, and after the first few holes Rave his opponent little chanco. Tho first hole went to Wynne in 3 to 4, Black being short off the tee. At the long second Biaclc played two perfect woods to tho greon to notch a win in 4 to o. Tho third was halved in bogey 4's after Wynne had narrowly missed his 'J. Both drovo well to tho fourth, but Wynne was short in two, while Black found tho green. Wynne made a great effort to halve, but his putt failed to drop. Tho fifth, played into the teeth of tho wind, went to Wynne in 4 to 5, Black badly slicing his second, tho match being all square. Black Playing Like Machine

Going to the sixth tho heavy cross-wind : rnudo approaching to tho island greon vory difficult and Wynne's seoond went overboard and,'making no mistake Black won tho hole in 4 to 5. The game to this Btngo had ' been even, but was now definitely in . Black's favour. Going to the seventh, Wynne 1 topped hia drive and taking four td reach ) tho green, lost to a 5. Tho eighth was also disastrous fof Wynne, who again duffod his i drive and, failing to recover, gave up tho ' holo. Black was now playing like a machine and after a perfect drivo and a bold iron Bhot on to tho dnn'treroua ninth green, he won tho holo in' 4 to 5, turning for homo 4 up. Both played good tee shots to tho 10th, but Black holed out from tho edge of tho greon for a win in a birdie 2, Wynne making a gallant attempt to halve. Long drives Went away to tho 11th, but Black reached tho green in two, Wynne being short in tho like, tho hole going to Black in -l to 5. Tho end camo at tho 12th, where Black, after two perfect shots, ringed tho hole with his putt for a birdio 3, his card being evenfours to here On St. Andrews, Black is very hard to beat, but it is surprising that a player of such ability is so poor an exponent at tho stop shot. Instead of standing up to the bali with tho weight on his heels and then smashing tho club-head through the ball without body movement, ho sways right through the shot. A season oo a closelybunkered course would force him to master such a shot. In the semi-final, Black was 4 up on H. Fisher at the eighth, but the putting at the last-named over the remaining holes was so good that Black was hard pressed to win. Fisher won the ninth, 11th and 13th, but Black became 2 up again at the 14th, only to lose tho 15th. At the 17th, Black was dead for a 4 and the match, when Fisher- holed a curly one for the half, -and. the 18th being also halved, Black prevailed by tho odd hole. Wynne's Fine Putting The other semi-final between Wynne and Ralph was also remarkable for the fine putting of the first-named. Wynne took the first holo in 2 by sinking a long putt and at the second he became 2 up by halving another good one for 4, after recovering from tho cross-bunker, Ralph missing aneasy one for tho half. Ralph's drive to tho third went over the bank and ho lost the holo to a nico 4, being now 3 down, Both were on the fourth in 3. but Ralph was stymied for a win in 4, a half resulting. Ralph got one back at the seventh, but lost tho eighth, and was 3 doWn at tho turn, the ninth being halved. Ralph won tho 10th and appeared to have the 11th safe, but Wynno holed a long one for a half. At the 12th, Wynno again became 3 up when he. holed a 15-footer for a birdie 3. Ralph won the 13th and the next two wero halved and Ralph got another back at tho lGth. At tho 17th, Ralph's drivo caroo to rest in an unplayable lie and, Wynne being short, a half i in 5 resulted. Neither could reach the 18th ' in 2 and Ralph's attempt to obtain his 4 narrowly failed, the match going to Wynne. The St. Andrews match was won by L. R. W. Reid (Hamilton), who defeated R. J. Love (Hamilton) by 2 up and 1 to play, mainly by the aid of deadly putting. Tho medal round played in the morning was too severe a test for most of the/ players, tho best cards being:—C. H.
