DEVONPORT SHIELD CONTEST THREE TEAMS EQUAL IN POINTS EXTENSION OF COMPETITION The Devonport Shield hockey competition, which was to have come to a conclusion on Saturday, will now require two more weeks in which to reach finality. As ti result of i St. Luke's drawing with University and Som- ! erville defeating Mpunt Eden, three teams now have equal points in the coutost, and j two deciding games will be necessary. I Ground conditions on Saturday were -fairly good, and both games provided close struggles. Play, however, was characterised by lost opportunities and lack of finish. St. Luke's had territorial advantages throughout its match but could not break through the stubborn University defence, the final ecore being one all. Somerville met 6turdy opposition in Mount Eden's team, but in tho second spell the forwards' superiority told, and Somerville won by three goals to 0. The positions of the teams tiro as follows : Points, Ch. P. W. Sj. D. F. A. pte. St. Luke's . . -1 2 1 1 0-5 5 University . 4 1 Somerville 4 2 1 1 11 6 5 North Shore 4 22 0 9 4 Mount Eden 4 STUBBORN DEFENCE ST. LUKE'S CIRCLE PLAY An attacking team hna seldom been eo consistently in an opponent's circle without scoring as St Luke's was in the drawn game against University. With the powerful St Luke's halfback line keeping the ball continually within striking* range, tho forwards were nevertheless unable to overcome the unyielding University defence. Crawley, in goal, playod a splendid game. St. Luke's was first to advance, Vipond and Brown reaching tho circle, but the University defence held and play was shifted to the other end. Grace raced down the flank, his shot from a difficult angle going over the top. A series of short passing rushes took St. Luke's into the University circlo again. A melee resulted in Brown mishitting the ball over the back lino. A Broun led the University forwards in an attack which penetrated St. Luke's circle. Carson blocked the movement and in a tussle tho ball went out of play. After a period of play in University territory, tho students' van raced down the field in a combined sortie, Koss finishing off with a tricky shot which beat Carson. St Luke's retaliated and for some time University had to defend strenuously. Several corners were conceded but the defence held, and Ross broke away. Lamb sent in a fine shot which Carson saved well, and again play drifted to the half-way line. Lack of finish iu tho circlo lost several chances for St. Luke's. r lhe at halftime was: University. 1; St. Luke's, 0. W. Burnett led a St Luke's attack at the opening' of tho second half, University being penned up for some minutes. Grace took a shot From a difficult angle, the ball struck tho outside of the net. St. Luke s kept up the pressure and finally, almost from the corner of the circle, W. Burnett shot successfully, equalising the score. A few moments later, Grace was seen in a fine solo effort, which was blocked by Crawley. who ran out St Luke's was now peppering Crawley with shots, and the University goalkeeper did well in saving shots from Vipond. N. Burnett and 1. Clark. Melees right in the goalmouth seemed certain to result in goals, but St. Lukes was finally repulsed temporarily, and .the University van reached the other circle, bt. Luke's, however, was soon back, and again Crawley did great work in the goalmouth. The ball was seldom out of the circle, and goals seemed inevitable. At last, the University van managed to break clear, and bt. Luke's quarters were invaded. A shot by Don went astray, and from the resultant bully the St Luke's forwards went down the field again. University kept them out of the circle for a time, but IS. Burnett was seen in a fast run which shifted play to the danger zone Vipond and Crawley had a tussle almost 'in the goalmouth The ball slipped past Crawley and was almost over the line when the clever University goalkeeper swung round and just managed to deflect it outside tho posts, the game ending ft few moments later with tho score: St. Luke's, 1; University, I. Messrs. G. Waddingham and E. J. Hewitt were referees.

SECOND SPELL VICTORY SOMERVILLE BEATS MOUNT EDEN After extending Somerville fully in the flrßt half of the match Mount Eden s defence weakened in the later Btace_s of the game and Somerville'a more scientific circle play won the game by 3 goals to 0. Vail and Seccombe were missing from somerville's ranks and the team Tie a whole did not show its usual" combination. Mount Jsden worked hard, but lack of finish in attack lost many opportunities. In the first few minutes of the game both forward lines attacked vigorously and tlic ball racged up and down the field in a series of smart passing rushes. Wcllbourne and E. Watta looked likely to score several times, but the defence was too good. After a brief respite Somerville was in Mount Eden's circle again and Wellbourne and C. Watts both hit the outside of the net with their shots. J. Horspool led a strong Mount Eden attack down the right and from a melee that resulted Clark shot astray. Somerville retaliated and pressed hard until just before half-time, when E. Watts, after clever stickwork, netted Somerville'a first v^l Fast, even play characterised Mie opening of the second spell and both circles were successively invaded. Finally, after a fast run down the left, Wellbourne beat Oliver with a hard shot. Mount Eden took »control of the game for a brief period, but Smith cleared and after a smart movement. Maxwell, receiving a pass from th e left, scored Somerville'a third goal. The remainder of the game was uneventful. Just on time Clark. after drawing Jordan from the Somerville goal-mouth, short-passed to Jansen, but the ball slipped past the lastnamed and the game ended with the score:— Somerville. 3: Mount Eden. 0. Messrs. E. J. Hewitt and C. Pre°ton were referees.
