PEACE CUP CHANGES HANDS HAMILTON DEFEATS MATAMATA Rngby competitions were continued in the various country centres 011 Saturday, when several representative games were played. The following r'-sults were forwarded by correspondents of the Herald;— Matamata. —Matamata lost the Peace Cup to Hamilton by a margin of four points The game was hard and keen throughout. tJi«s visitors having a slight territorial advantage, chiefly as a result of Rood hooking by Byine. The first econ came shortly before half-time when Den* cross-kicked, following an effort by Hook and Parker. Swap fumbled the ball and failing badly to recover, Paterson dribbled over to score. LissetU converted. There was 110 further score before half-time. With the wind, Matamata was expected to show up. but. contrary to expectations, Hamilton continued to dominate the play. After n quarter of an hour, the Hamilton backs opened out.. The whole of the back-lino handled and Johnstone outpaced the opposition to score near the posts. Lissette converted. Matamata now improved somewhat in hooking nnd, following a torrid rush led by Story, a scrum formed on Hamilton's line. F. Cassidy got" offside and B. Inman kicked a good goal from wdl out. Matamata kept up the pressure and a brilliant bout of passing by the backs saw the ball travel through eight pairs of hands for Carroll to score. B! Inman's kick just missed. Morrinsville.—The Morrinsville junior representatives gained a narrow win over Matamata juniors by 3—o in the semi-final match of the Clarke Cup competition for the junior championship of tho Waikato. J. Mohn scored for Morrinsville from a lineout in the corner.

Otorohanga.—The semi-final match of tho senior knock-out competition played between Old Boys and Otewa at the Island in fine weather resulted in 0 win for the latter by 20 points to S. Neither team was at full strength and shortly after half-time Otewa had a 20 to 0 lead, consisting of scores by W. Kamana (2). T. Tukere', J. Hughes and Jack Kite, while Joe Kite kicked a penalty goal and Tukere converted ouo try. In the dying stages of tho game the cs-sludents took control, but were unable to catch the country team's big lead. For Old Boys,. 11. Moerua kicked a penalty goal and A. Atkinson raced over in a solo effort 011 th 9 call of time, A. Ormsby converting. Otewa will meet United in the final next Saturday. ,Te Kuiti.—The principal match was between To Kuiti (champion team of tho Maniapoto sub-union) and United (Otorohanga sub-union champion team) for the Iletet Memorial Shield. This is the third challenge Te Kuiti (holders) have withstood for the shield this season, winning by 20 points to 11. The game was hard-fought and there were patches of bright play. For the winners, Tilley put up a brilliant performance, being responsible for 14 points of the total scored, gaining three trie 3, converting one and kicking a penalty. Fgr Te Kuiti, Evans. McLeod, Wolfe. Thomas and Gilbert also played well. Dockery, centre-three-quarters, was the brains of the United team, while Kempthorne, in tho forwards, and McVeigh, halfback, were also prominent. All the United forwards played well. Mr. Tuheka Het.°t was referee. Te Kuiti will next meet Manunui for the Relet .trophy. Toko defeated Hancatiki by 11 points t<> 6 after a hard game. Rough play occurred and a liangatilri player was ordered off lor striking an opposing player and knocking him out. Mr. N. Ingpen wa3 referee. Whangarei.—The final in the senior knock-out competition was played on Rugby Park between Hikurangi and City, resulting in a drawn game, 9 points each. The game was played 011 a dry. hard ground, in the presence of a fair attendance of spectators, who were treated to a fast, open game. Tries for Hikurangi were obtained by Beehre and Linnell. while I. Hamilton kicked a penalty goal, and for City tries were obtained by McKenzie, McArdle and Pickering. Finlayson was the most prominent of a very good set of forwards for Hikurangi, and Linnell. J. Hamilton nnd Lawrie were tho best of that team's backs. For City, Mahunga and McKenzie were the outstanding forwards, with Pickering and Gladding the pick of the backs, tho firstnamed playing the best back game on the ground. No other senior games were played. Other matches resulted:—Junior knock-out competition: Hora Hora, 19, Old Boys. 3. The holder of the Harding Shield, Hokianga, successfully defended the trophy against Northern Waivoa at Rawene in a drawn game, 3—all. Northern Wairoa was leading at half-time. Opotikl.—The Opotiki representatives retained the Hurinui-Apanui Shield against tho Galatea sub-union, winning by 23 points. The game was played in cold, showery weather, before a good crowd. Tho Opotiki backs showed improved combination, overshadowing the opposition. The visiting forwards played well, but received poor support. Soon after the game commenced Mansell scored near tho corner. Jone3 next ran from half-way and scored a brilliant try. Galatea attacked, but Black secured and sent Hawkiflb over. From a scrum nt Galatea's twenty-five Hawkins cut in beautifully nnd scored between "tho posts. Black converted. Opotiki continued to dominate play and just on half-time Black ran through the opposition. Jones again cut through and scored. Black converting. Through tho fullback receiving no support Wilkinson secured and scored for Galatea, converting his own try. Tho Opotiki backs combined well. Paul obtaining a try. Brown next scored for Opotiki. and immediately afterwards Kelly was sent over, Sidney converting, making the final score:—Opotiki, 33; Galatea, 5. i

Te Puke.—ln tho match played .at To Puke. Taurnnga won by 9 points to 7. Cnmeron scored three tries for the winners, while McKenzie scored for Te Puke nnd Farmer kicked a field goal. The following will represent Te Puke in the final shield match to be played next Saturday:—Fullback, Geary; three-quarters, Moae3, Corbett, McKenzie; nve-eighths, Farmer. Ahimiro: halfback. Potaka; forwards. Hadley. Whiteside, Morton, Wickliffe, Bradford. Jovce, Malcolm. Tai, Raymond. Reserves: Potene, McNaughlon, Jackson.

Thames.—The senior and iujiior cup finals resulted:—Seniors: Physical Training, 12. College Old Boys, 0. Juniors: College Old Boys, 20, Physical Training, C. Tauransa.—A Rugby match played between the Matnkana and Rangataua Clubs' senior teams was won by Mataknna by 2G points to 9. Paeroa.—The Paeroa and Morrinsville representative teams met here. The game was even and interesting up to half-time when the score was:—Paeroa, 5; Morrinsville. 3. In tho second spell Morrinsville used its weight to greater advantage and compiled a- further 21 points, 4'ho game ending:— Morrinsville, 21: Paeroa. 6. For the winners, tries were scored by Anderson (2), Harnett (2) and Gleeson. W. Cameron converted three tries and kicked a penalty goal. Thomas scored for Paeroa rind Lawrence converted. . Te Awamutu.—Matamnta's second fifteen played Waipa in the final for the Finlay Cup nnd won by 3 points to 0. From tho outset tho Matamata forwards, fast nnd effective, adopted spoiling tactics and had Te Awamutu in trouble time after time. Soon after half-time Waipa's halfback, Ato Jackson, sustained a broken leg, and thereafter Waipa was at a disadvantage. The defence held, however, until three minutes before time when from a line-out near Waipa's line the ball was thrown to Campbell, and ho dived over to score. Wilson failed with the kink. Mr. Thorpe, of Hamilton, referred. Waipa's second junior representatives plnyed Oforohanga and registered a win by 9 points to G after a keen struggle. The visitors opened with a penalty goal by K. Pukekohe.—The first match this season for the Massey Challenge Cup saw tho trophy change hands, the Pitkekoho Union's representatives, which held it last season asainst nll-comcrs being defeated by tho Waiuku Union's representatives by five points <4o three. The game was mainly a forward tussle, with Waiuku showing to better advantage. Waiuku went through in a passinc rush. Jackson scorins and converting. There was no alteration by half-time. In tho second half Fallows secured, boat two opponents and sent on to Wood and Ward, who scored on the wing. In the South Auckland Union's junior competition, Pukekohe beat Franklin, 9—o.
