RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP ATTRACTIONS FOR TO-MORROW MANUKAU PLAYS PONSONBY The Auckland Rugby Union's senior championship competition will be continued tomorrow afternoon. There will be two matches on the oval at Eden Pork, tho first being between Grammar and Training College at 1.30 p.m., and tho succeeding one between Manukau and Ponsonby at 3 p.m. Grammar is leading for the championship by one point from Ponsonby, and so great interest centres in both matches. Grammar should beat Training College, although its task will not be easy if tho latter team can produce tho form it displayed a few weeks ago, when tho 6idt» defeated Ponsonby. The principal cams should be a keenly contested one. Ponsonby will have to win if it desires a chance of playing off with Grammar for the championship. Manukau was a little unlucky when it lost to Ponsonby in tho first round. The other matches liavo beeif ecattered about. Otahuhu and University will meet at tho Show Grounds, and while tho latter is expected to win, it will err if it holds tho suburban fifteen too cheaply. MANAWHENUA BEATS TARANAKI EIGHTEEN POINTS TO FOURTEEN [nV IEtEGRAPH —PRESS 'ASSOCIATION] STRATFORD, Thursday In a Rugby football match to-day Manawhenua bent Taranaki by 18 points to 14 after a good game played on a greasy field. Taranaki was superior throughout the opening spell, but Manawhemia made a vastly improved showing throughout the final spell. Manawhenua owed its victory principally to solid, dishing the visting backs handled a heavy ball much better, with the result that they were seen in several good combined efforts. Neither in tlio backs nor the forwards was Taranaki up to the expected standard. The game was hard-fo.usht, but seldom approached brilliant heights. The Manawhenua fullback. Barrett, was particularly safe, both in handling and tackling. Ho was also responsible for some good goal-kicking. On attack M. Johnson was Hit most prominent of the visitors' backs. His speed mndo him dangerous whenever play %va3 in Taranaki territory. The inside backs, Irving, Bramwell and Wasley, took time to settle down, but throughout the concluding spell figured in a number of bright movements. Both Elliott and Cooko showed speed njid dash on the -tvings. Amonp the visiting pack, which on tho play, was superior to Taranaki, Cooper. McKenzie and Roddick were always in. the picture For Taranaki Kinsella and F. Young proved dashinc on the wing, but Haught'on had an "off" day in attack, and these two fast men did not get- many openings through combined movemenls. Petty, at fullback, did not compare favourably with the All Black. Collins, who wn« an emergency. The All Black, Clarke, Wills and Luak were the most prominent Taranaki, forwards. Tries wero scored for Manawhenua by Cooper, Johnston, Wasley and Elliott. Barrett converted three tries. For Taranaki F. Young and Kinsella scored. F. Young- converted one try and kicked two penalty goals.
