TE AROIIA JOCKEY CLUB SUCCESS OF LAST MEETING HIGH STAKES JUSTIFIED COURSE OFFICIALS' FEES [most Ot-R OWN correspondent] TE AROHA, Thursday Tho annual general meeting of the To Aroha Jockey Club was held last evening. Mr. R. L. Somers presiding over an attendance of about 50 members, representing Matamata and "VVaharoa. Before commencing business all present stood in silence to the memory of membors who had died during the year. The balance-shoot showed «i loss for the year of £4BB, against a dobit balance of £1304 the previous year. In moving tho adoption of the balancesheet, the chairman extended his congratulations ,to tho club on the excellent results of the last meeting. The policy for the futtire would bo to refrain from any uuduly heavy expenditure. The last meeting was one of the best on record, and attracted horses that had since been sent to Australia and were fakingpart in big events there, said the president. A great number of clubs, particularly country clubs, had been cheeseparing their stakes in order to meet the difficult, times. To Aroha, on the other hand, decided to take a risk and increased its stakes. The result was a splendid financial success. Members would now see that this policy, adopted at a very unsettled period, was amply repaid. They could safely leave it to the committee to see that" tho stakes were not unduly out down* for, tho next meeting. Discussing tho balance-sheet, Mr. J. Pohlen," Matamata, expressed the opinion that while tho balance-sheet was otherwise a very good one, tho fees paid to course officials were unduly high. It appeared to Mm that they alone of practically all persons in the country had not suffered-a cut. and ho thought that they should be treated tli© Bame us horse-owners and others connected with the sport. . The secretary. Mr. J. P. Somers, said that for the two-day meeting at Te Aroha the judge received 3G guineas, handicapper 34 guineas, clerk of- scales 11 guineas and paddock steward 10 guineas. . i Mr. Pohlen: That makes it 91 guineas that the club must find. I am firmly of the opinion that it is far too much. I would like to make it a strong recommendation to the committee to make some rcduction in the course officials wages, oi, failing •that, to get capable officers who would be willing to act in an honorary capacity. Such a large' amount to tho judge seems to me to be out of all reason and is no encouragement to horse-ownors to follow up the sport. The president said that already this mat+«r had been dealt with by tho committee, Ikieh td Altod U» Wlsr .1 pwrlM »»«!■ large fees in view of tho times. The balance-sheet- was adopted. ,• i, The chairman said he considered it hign time the charges on transporting hoises to race meetings were reduced. Officers elected were :-Patron. the Kt. TTnn J G Coates; president-. Mr. R. li. Somers'(23rd year); vice-presidents Mesars. p. Bffcne, R. Burke and J. B. committee, Messrs. F. G. Hunt, <j. ai_ aiTshan P. T. Rowe. J. Kenny. !<• JAislabie.' G. P. Goodfellow and J. A. Hepburn; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Somers. • ___ COMPRIS' PROGRAMME MELBOURNE CUP PREPARATION [by TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday Mr C A. Lyon, the new owner of Compris.'has through his agents in Wellington instructed C. Davey to continue training tho gelding at Ricc-arton and Sive him a preparation for tho Melbourne Cup.
