UNEMPLOYMENT SCHEME 4A

Sir, —"Disgusted Digger" writes on the above protesting against the Unemployment Board closing down on this scheme. It would be better if the board closed down on all farm work schemes permanently, for then hundreds of u s who are old country workers would get back into work again. I refer to the genuine country workers who, by thrift and hard work, had saved up a few hundred pounds and been turned off thoir jobs to make room for the board's unthrifty men. We cannot sign up on any of the board's various schemes as our savings prevent this, and the majority of farmers are all out for relief labour. We have to pay toward this relief work, and does "Disgusted Digger" realise that when on this relief work scheme he is taking the job that a country worker has been pushed out of to make room for him ? My late master turned me off to make room for a cheap relitf worker. It seems that only two classes of people benefit from the relief scheme, the penniles s relief worker, and the wealthy property owner, who gets cheap labour provided for practically nothing. I can now get a few months of milking work> to be immediately sacked when the hoard lifts the restrictions again. Then "Disgusted Digger" can have his old job again, and I can go back to town, and contribute to keep all the board's relief schemes going and gradually use up my savings, and then get all the work I want. The Government "preaches thrift, but of what use is thrift, when the frugal worker is penalised by being turned off his job in favour of the unthrifty? As a practical farm hand I could get plenty of work if my savings were not against nie, but everywhere I turn j.he same Question is asked me, "Sign up under the board's scheme." The board, with its Soviet ostrich-headed methods is ruining the thrifty country worker. Bill the Fencer.
