MYSTERIES OF A TUNNEL
DISAPPEARANCE OF TIMBER VANISHING IN THE NIGHT A tunnel that was excavated about 14 years ago to expedite the reclamation of Mussel Bay, at Dunedin, has two unsolved side issues connected with it. Those lire as 'to the actual original cosfc of the tunnel, and who stole the timbering out of it. The first is as old as the tunnel itself; the second is more recent. Some say the tunnel cost about £1400;' others assert that the cost was about .£3OOO. ; The tunnel itself was heavily timbered with blue gum timber, and was admittediy a good job. But it was only about three months ago when reclamation was again mooted and the tunnel inspected that upwards of 100 pieces of hardwood timber were discovered to bo missing. In order to facilitate apprehension of tho thieves strict secrecy was observed. The Borough Council met in committee, tho corporation employees were put oil detective duty, but precautions failed to prevent marked timber from vanishing in tho night. As a hopeless caso it was then referred to tho police, and planking from an old hulk was used to reiino the stripped portion of tho tunnel.
