WORLD ECONOMICS
LONDON CONFERENCE INSPIRATION OF OTTAWA MR. BRUCE'S HIGH HOPES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 29, C.35 p.m.) NEW YORK. Aug. 28 "The forthcoming World Economic Conference in London presents real hope to a distracted and almost desperate world, said Mr. S. M. Bruce, in an address at New York this evening. He said he refused to contemplate that the conference would be a failure. What was done at Ottawa if applied to a wider sphere should materially assist in the restoration of the world's prosperity. "At Ottawa," said Mr. Bruce, "we recognised the necessity for wise protection by tariffs for efficient industry, but we were equally convinced that prohibitions and prohibitory tariffs must bo abolished. The fact that one group of nations was able to establish this principle should erjeourage the hope that an agreement may be reached in the international field."
Mr. Bruce will sail on Wednesday for England to take up his duties as Australian Minister in London.
