FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following' are extracts from the New Zealand Her alp of August 30, 1882: Our readers will remember that some time ago. we announced that- a petition had been sent to the Governor from the ratepayers in the Karangahape Highway District praying to be amalgamated with the city of Auckland. Various motives prompted the ratepayers t, take this step, chief among them being the apparent random way in which property in the district was valued. Several efforts were made to get up-a counter petition and at last one has been issued and is in course of circulation. Those who were connected with the getting up of the original petition assert that the counter petition contains libellous mn*W and warn ratepayers of the danger they incur in subscribing to what is designated as a libel. This 1 ainly a curious turn to be taken in connection with a petition to the Governor and may lead to a nice crop of lawsuits. While such uncertainty exists respectingv the alleged libellous character of the contents of the petition referred to, ratepayers would act wisely in being cautious what they subscribe. >- The Parnell Borough Council have piveii instructions tp the engineers. Messrs. Boylan and Lundon, to proceed forthwith with the preparation of the necessary plans and specifications for (lie drainage contract, involving an expenditure of £BOOO. Tenders will'be called for (lie work simultaneously in Auckland and the South. There will be about eight miles of piping and sewers with the necessary connections.
