POLAR YEAR SCHEME
STATION IN NEW ZEALAND RECORDINGS IN CANTERBURY Mr. 11. F. Skey, director of the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory, left for Amberley last-Tuesday to direct the installation of magnctographs to bo used for observations during the Polar year. These observations are part of a worldwide system sponsored by tho Polar Year Commission, and the results to bo obtained are expected to have important scientific and practical vqjue. Amberley, .which is 34 miles north of Christchurch, will be tho furthest south observing station taking part. The instruments, a special triple set of magnetographs for preciso open scale recording, have been provided free by the commission and have arrived from Copenhagen. They are housed at the observatory sub-station in the Amberley Domain. Tho station has been enlarged for the purpose, and a man will be throughout the year to take the readings. The Polar year began on August 1, and from that date observations have been taken in stations throughout tho world.
