RUAPEHU SKI CLUB WINNERS OF THE EVENTS TWO VISITORS HONOURED [by telegraph—OWN CORRESPONDENT] THE CHATEAU, Saturday The growth in popularity of alpine sports in New Zealand was indicated this week by the record entries for the New Zealand ski-ing championship events, which wore conducted by the Ruapehu Ski Club in co-operation with the ski committee of the New Zealand Federated Mountain Clubs. The meeting was favoured by brilliant weather. Much interest was given by the presence of Mr. T. W. Mitchell, Australian ski champion, and Mr. S. Tennant, a member of the Ski Club of Great Britain. Both Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Tennant were unanimously elected honorary members of the Buapehu Ski Club at a farewell gathering tendered to them at the Chateau before their departure for Mount Cook. Mr. Mitchell was also presented, at another gathering, with the Major Head trophy, for the slalom and downhill events, by Mr. R. Svme, vice-president of the Ruapehu Ski Club. Glimpses of the Taranaki Bight were also obtained. The descent to the Salt Hut was made in two hours, in spite of the fact that 3000 ft. of steps had to be cut. MOUiSTT COOK CONTESTS INTERFERENCE BY WEATHER [by telegraph—press association] THE HERMITAGE, Saturday Yesterday's break in the weather developed to-dav at the Ball hut into a strong gale, with steady rain, which continued all day. Ski-ing was impossible and the South Island inter-club sports meeting was abandoned, the downhill, relay and jump events not being held. The meeting resulted in a good win for the Tasman Ski Club, with an aggregate of 200 points. Other clubs were:—Canterbury Winter Sports Club. 167.4 points; Christchurch Ski Club, 160.22; Aorangi (one event), 82.59.
