CONCESSION TO ART
CAPTAIN HOBSON'S UNIFORM Artists depicting the scene of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi represent Captain Hobson, resplendent in full naval uniform, presiding over the proceedings. This, according to Mr. T. Lindsay Buick. is an inaccurate representation. There was a misunderstanding about the time the ceremony was to take place, said Mr. Buick in Wellington a few nights ago in the course of a lecture on the Treaty of Waitangi, and Captain Hobson had to hurry to the scene. "So great was his haste, that the only part of his uniform he was able to pick up was. his cocked hat, and he camo ashoro in the somewhat incongruous dress of civilian clothes surmounted by a naval hat. When, therefore, you pass by the Queen Victoria monument in Wellington and you look at its base and see a representation of Captain Hobson in full naval uniform witnessing the chiefs signing the treaty, you will have to allow it to pass a concession to art, for it is not historically correct."
