Owing to counter-attractions there was only a moderate attendance of the public. Tho weather was fine' and the ground in splendid order. The> game proved to be rather ragged, particularly in the first spell. There were too many "shiners" in tho Auckland pack, all looking for tho open play. The result was that tho country forwards were able to sweep through tho opposition and they gave tho Auckland backs a lively time*, There was a decided weakness in tho Auckland five-eighths line, but a rearrangement in the second spell effected a' slight improvement and enabled Auckland to gain victory by a narrow margin,/ Stacey was the best forward in the 'Auckland team, Knight and T. Carter also doing good work, while Frascr was prominent in the second spell. K. Carter was tho outstanding back, displaying much dash and determination. Inglis and Mathcson both did a lot of good rush stopping. Mitlieson tackled soundly and his lino kicking was good. i Visitors Unfortunate On tho advantage it claimed in, tho first spell South Auckland wag a little unfortunuato in being defeated. Scores were missed' by narrow margins on several occasions, while an accurate placo kick would havo put tho issue beyond doubt. The visiting forwards infused'much more life into their play than their opponents and worked together better as a pack. Guise, Brcgman, McFarlano and McAlpine were always to the fore. James played a very fine game at five-eighths, being quick to. seize openings, and at times he made the opposition look very weak, especially when he scored the last try of the game. Hira played soundly at fullback. The teams were as follows: — Auckland.—Fullback, Matheson; threequarters, El. Smith, Fletcher, K. Carter; five-eighths, Tetley, Wilkes; halfback, Inglis; forwards, T, Carter, Johnson, Scarborough, Stacey, Knight, Brown (captain), Bowling, Fraser. Sciuth Auckland.—Fullback, Hira; threequarters, Johnston, Wood, White; five-eighths, Jackson, James; halfback, Hogan; forwards, Guise (captain), BregFulton, Taua, McFarlane, McAlpine, 'Atkinson, Nathan. A loose rush by the South Auckland forwards took play to within a couple of feet of the corner, where from the lineout Matheson was pushed" back and he forced the ball. The South Auckland forwards gained a lot of ground with loose rushes, a penalty giving Auckland relief. The home forwards were penalised near> their line, but White missed the angular shot. Knight and Bowling led the Auckland forwards in a rush to halfway. Play was rather ragged for some time, owing to bad handling and indifferent passing. Stacey dribbled away from. a scrum, and, picking up the ball, passed in to Brown, who knocked on. A missed drop at goal by Matheson saw the ball cross the visitors' line for the firs* time, a force-down resulting. An exchange of kicks resulted in Matheson compelling the .visitors to force again. A long kick sent the ball into touch near Auckland's line and from the loose scrum following the line-out McFarlane hurled himself across for a try. White failed at goal. South Auckland, 3; Auckland, 0. A tricky run by K. Carter placed Auckland in a good position, but the forwards were beaten for the ball in tho scrums and play swung back to the other end. Hero from a scrum Bregman forced his way over. McAlpine failed at goal and tho spell 'ended:—South Auckland, 6; Auckland, 0. Auckland Gains Lead Auckland put a little more life into its play after the interval. Fletcher was moved in from centre to second fiveeighths, exchanging places with Tetley. The last-named kicked the ball over the visitors' line and K. Carter fell on it, but dead ball was ruled. Knight next made an <?sort to bullock his way over, being held up on the line. A fine piece of dribbling by Guise had Auckland in difficulties and K. Carter was fortunate in forcing after a weak clearing kick. A further alteration was made in the 'Auckland backs, Fletcher and K. Carter changing positions. Fast following bustled tho South Auckland fullback, who was "robbed of the ball, and, after a short bout of passing, Wilkes scored near tho corner. Matheson failed at goal. South Auckland, 6; Auckland, 3. Stacey was penalised for going round a, scrum too quickly, but Guise made a poor attempt at goal from long range.
