EPSOM TRACK-WORK RAIN HAMPERS TRAINING DAN DIRECTS USEFUL TASK BY ABAYDOS Heavy rain hampered training operations at Epsom yesterday .morning, when tho cinder track was available. Dan Direct (A. T. NewdicH>. Fisher (A. Patten), and Great Fame (G; Coles) were associated in a sound efTort over thret lans. Great Fame doing his work in saddle. The three kept well together until a furlong from home, where Dan Direct, who was nulling hard in behind, made a forward move. He passed Fisher, but Great Fame, appreciating his light-weight, hung on to finish on terms. Wee Machine (E. S. Groat) paced boldly over a' nlile and a-lialf. finishing with a dash home from the straight entrance. Wee Machine has made good progress during the last fortnight and he should strip in excellent condition next week. He has yet to prove equal to repeating his good track work in a race.

Mania's Sou (E. S. Groat) trotted very evenly over three laps and handled the cinder track in approved style. Mama's Son lins done well in his preparation and is a picture of pood health. He will have his first race as a three-year-old at the Auckland meeting, but will be giving awav several seconds to compete in the Introductory Handicap. , On the entul (rack Parrish Hello (A. G. Pillingcr) stepped along merrily over occasional furlongs, showing a nice turn of speed, while working at a slower gait she pulled very hard and was anxious to increase the speed. Punish Belle foil away after her June racing, but has now built up well in condition. Realty (li. S. Groat) also worked at a useful clip on the same track, and when allowed to step along ior a Quarter along (he back displayed a good turn of speed. So fnr Groat has succeeded in keeping "Hcnltv sound and with the likelihood of the tracks remaining 011 the soft side for the coming meeting, tho big Heal Guy pneer should be produced in good form. Win JTuon (C. G. Lee) was not asked for anything serious and is still displaying signs of soreness. As far as appearances go Win Htiou looks in nice condition, but tho recurring shoulder trouble 4 is affecting: his preparation. He is doing his light tasks on the sand and should find the track suitable when asked to race next week. FORM OF AYRMONT CHIMES Ayrmont Chimes, who claims an engagement in the two leading events at the Auckland trotting meeting, competed successfully at the same fixture last season. He won the August Handicap and was narrowly beaten by Great Fairish in tho Masse.v Memorial Handicap, after being penalised 21 yards foi his earlier win. Just prior to coming north, last August he won twice at AJclinston Ayrmont Chimes competed at. Aldington last week, but did not meet with success. He was unlucky 011 the first day. losing his driver, and oil the second day did not have a good run. while 111 his final elTort be did not show up prominently. He should derive benefit from tho racing and should be very lit for his Epsom engagements. BRENTUGHT'S CONSISTENCY Brenllight. who ifi engaged in the Massev Memorial Handicap at tho Auckland trotting meeting, is a six-year-old gelding by Matchlight, owned and trained in Canterbury by J. J. Kennerley. Hrentlight has raced most consistently, if somewhat unluckily. over all distances, and it is seldom that he fails to finish 111 a place, although usually lie is shaded into second berth. Brentlight was formerly owned, and trained by V. Alborn. who found him a useful proposition, and since joining J\ennerley's stable the Matchlight pacer has paid his way. He will have ''u i' -nod of recent racing, and should be m good condition for his engagement next week.
