RACING IN SYDNEY

LARGE NEW ZEALAND TEAM MUNGATOON . SCORES A WIN DEFEAT OF MANAWHENUA [FROM Ot'lt OWN COniIERrONDENT] SYDNEY, Aug. 12 Five horses of the eleven who nrrived this week bring the tally of New Zealand horses in Sydney to over 50. To these will be added A. McAuley's four and some to be brought over by C. Gieseler. In Melbourne George Jones has a lengthy string, and then there are the junipers Landmark, Make Up, Copey nnd Appledore, and Arannah and Lady Alert. Tho grand total will not fall far short of 100. The latest arrivals, Autopay, Silver Ring and Cylinder all travelled well. Silver Ring created most interest and his looks do not bclio his Now Zealand reputation. All three did easy exercise at Rnndwick on Wednesday morning. S. J. Reid should be well pleased with the appearance of Historic when he arrivos in about ten dayß. Tho big chestnut has worked well and looks ready to be. backed at any time. Might nnd Forestry have also done Well under -H. B. Lorigan's care. Gold Mag has had a light dose of physic as a reward for his two wins last week. Ho is being regarded now ns a possiblo Epsom Handicap light-weight, but no doubt J. Hennah will place him to advantage. He is still eligible for the Trial Stnkes at fixed weights at Randwick on Epsom Day, a rnco which should suit him and justify solid support too. Jamieson's Luck Changes Muskefoon's son Mungatoon broke J. T. Jamieson's run of ill-luck at Menanglo on Tuesday; He was well supported in a large field from fair odds to short-priced favouritism. By many he was considered lucky to defeat Zillian, who drew No. 21 at the barrier agniii6t his No. 1. Mungatoon began smartly and Jed all the way, having a length to sparo at the finish. Horses on tho outside are at a big disadvantage over five furlongs at Mennngle. However. Mungatoon won and to a degree retrieved the fortunes of his stable. H. Rama produced Manawhenua in tho principal event of nine furlongs. Manawhenua, ridden by T. Green, carried topweight, 0.7 (7.0 minimum), nnd was n solid favourite. He was well beaten out of a place but looks sure to do better before long. Cockpen scored a third place to Mungatoon and Zillian, finishing on well. This was his most determined effort here to date and was rather more encouraging for H. B. Lorigan. Runners at Warwick Farm Few New Zealand horses raced at Warwick Farm last Saturday. C. Emerson elected to send both Concentrate and Oratorian out in the Flying Handicap, six furlongs. Naturally Concentrate tailed the field into the straight, but over the last furlong he was catching them all as if they were tied up. He is working very freely, and if there was not the doubt about his leg. ho would be a warm fancy for spring distance events, for he is one of the proved stayers. Orntorian showed a fair amount of pace, but ran wide at the turn. H. B. Lorigan gave Lavington another chance in the Farm Stakes, 1} miles. Without ever really looking like it winner Lavington reached sixth place. A. D. Webster's Leighton—Vulvate filly Western Sky was a runner in tho Maiden Three-year-old Handicap, but was not mentioned in the betting and her name was not called in the lace. A Brother to Havaspot G. Young has a fine looking two-year-old brother to Havaspot in his stable. So far Mr. D. Fraser has not been able to secure a suitable name for him. Apart from the successes of Derniid and Havaspot his older relatives, lie is a colt to command -attention. He is chestnut like Havaspot and in ap pearance favours him much more than tho mean-looking Derniid. Top Rank, the two-year-old by Chief Ruler from Comedy Queen, in C. Emerson's stable, has done well at Randwick. So far he has sprinted as well as any of the local juveniles and in a schooling effort from the barrier on Wednesday began like an old hand.

Jamieson is sending Ammon Rn along again 3iow. The bay has big bar shoes in the front, yet at Randwick yesterday morning he gave Hard Words a start oyer five furlongs and caught him to record 1.22, tho best cilort of the morning. NEW ZEALAND HORSES ARRIVAL AT SYDNEY (Received August ]G, 0.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 10 Of (he three New Zealand racehorses which arrived by the Maunganui to-day Night march weathered t lib high seas like an old salt.
