"This is a bit of a bombshell. We have ten fire engines, and about £250 will be involved," explained the chairman of the Fire Board, Mr. T. M. Charters, when advice was received from the City Council that the board's eftg'nes were required to take out heavy traffic licences. It was decided to refer Hie matter to the inspector of fire brigades and the fire boards in the three other centres to obtain information which might be of assistance in dealing with the request. Tueßday 'A circular letter from the Minister of Transport asking for its opinion on the proposal that farmers' lorries should be exempt from the payment of licence fees under the heavy traffic regulations came before the Waipa County Council at its meeting yesterday. A member suggested that the fees for farmers' lorries might, be reduced to half the ordinary rates. Other members objected, on the ground that ratepayers did not own motor vehicles would liave to bear the extra taxation needed. Tuesday The Dargaville Borough Council voted "gainst the proposal to exempt farmers' lorries, exclusively used for carrying farm jxodiuo from the payment of heavy licence fees. The ITobson County Council supported tho proposal at its meeting to-day.
