SECONDARY SCHOOLS

TEAMS TIE IN CHAMPIONSHIP AUCKLAND AND MOUNT ALBERT The secondary schools' panics at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon were a fitting climax to an unusually interesting coinpetition. In consequence of t he!r^victories over King's College and Takapuna Grammar respectively, Auckland Grammar and Mount Albert Grammar share the championship honours of the season. So •evenly matched were these four teams that it was not until Saturday that tho fate of tho championship was definitely decided. With two points fewer than the leaders Takapuna fills third place, King's, another point further down, being fourth. Fast and thrilling, the game between Grammar and King s was in keeping with tradition. What little difference there was between the merits of these t>io teams ivhs ill Grammar's favour. The winning team was generally more forceful and polished in its movements and deserved its victory. The forwards heeled the ball from most of the scrums, thereby allowing the rearguard to prove itself very 'able on attack. / Prominent among the hard-working Grammar forwards were Lennard and Buckley. Ling played extremely well until he withdrew from the pack in order to replace Roberts, who had retired hurt, on tho wing. .Graham, at half, gave a-heady display, and smartly sent his backs away. The first five-eighths. Breilstrum, made few mistakes, and Reid, the centre, was seen in some penetrating runs. Although his handling was often weak, Spit tall had plenty of dash on the wing, and McGowaJ) was reliable at fullback. The King's forwards oflered stern resistance to their opponents. McCarthy, / / Lazarus and Makgjll impressed with their keenness. The five-eighths, Gillies, was in good form, while Moses, who filled the centre position, was a lower of strength to his side. The fullback, Meredith, was 100 liable to bo bustled to be sound. , Mount Albert bettered Takapuna in fcoth forward and back play. McCowan, Wall, Bannatyne and Cox head were repeatedly conspicuous in forward movements, while Hook was brilliant, at second five-eighths. His quickness to see weaknesses in tho defence enabled liirn to score two of Mount Albert's three tries. Mount Albert has a fine three-quarter line in Johnson, Williams and Clarke. Williams Ss a very promising young player, while Clarke combines speed with cleverness. Of the. Takapuna forwards, Adams, Halloway, Emery and Massey often caught I the eye for their vigorous plav. Sale, the flrst five-eighths, and Blair, fullback. gavt> E fhm lipnt. Hiftolava of tlift banW
