This is the first representative match ever played in Wales, and there is some criticism, as the Cardiff wicket is not likely to provide even a remote resemblance to Australian conditions. England batted first and had made 180 runs, for three wickets when stumps were drawn. Larwood found the foothold insecure, but with the total at twelve he dismissed Pataudi on the occasion of the Indian's first trial as Sutcliffe's partner.
