BRITISH BY-ELECTION
VICTORY FOR LABOUR FOOD TAX FEAR A FACTOR (Received July 28, 5.5 p.m.) i ' LONDON, July 27 A by-election was held to-day to fill the Wednesbury seat itt the House of Commons formerly held by Viscount Ednam. The poll resulted in a Labour victory, as follows: J, Benfield (Labour) . . 21,977 E. Davis (Conservative) . . 18,198 After the, declaration of the poll Mr. Benfield, in the course of a speech, said he had no doubt that a tremendous fillip had been given to Labour by the people's fear that the Ottawa Conference was going to result in -the taxation of wheat and meat. I At the last general election the poll for the Wednesbury seat resulted as follows: Viscount Ednam (Conservative), 25,000; A. Short (Labour), 20,842.
