HORSES AT RICCARTON

HIGH PITCH'S PROSPECTS GOOD DISPLAY BY NASSOCK FULL MEASURE IMPROVES . [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCITUItCH, Thursday Showery weather and wet tracks restricted fast work at Riccarton to-day, only those horses with engagements at Washdyke on Saturday being allotted other than useful tasks. Tho only interest in the morning's programme was centred in some schooling. Paris (G. Dempster), Taramoa (V. Dempster) and High Pitch (R. Beale) wore associated in a round of tho inside steeplechase fences. High Pitch kept in behind the Invqrcargill pair from tho outset, all threo jumping very satisfactorily. High Pitch save an encouraging display for his second essay over the country. He could have been up with his companions at any atago. Ho will bo ridden in Saturday's engagement by Beale_, who also has the mount on him in tho Grand Notional Steeplechase. G. Dempster has been engaged to ride him in tho Grand National Hurdles, while Beale will probably pilot Conjurer JI. in that race. iNassock (H. Turner) executed an impressive display over eight hurdles. He jumped fast and clean, but appears to bo affected in the wind and a long journey would probably find a weaknciis in him. Royal Mint (Murfitt) was no uso to Dainty Ways (Turner) in a similar task. The former was sent home from Awapuni by Mrs. A. McDonald owing to his unsoundness and indications aro that his lady ownor will not get any better results from him here. Dainty Ways arrived from Greymouth this morning in the charge of her trainer, M. Conza. She has had a good deal of schooling at Omoto and is undoubtedly a very promising recruit. She will have her first race over hurdles at Washdyke on Saturday. She is a clever, speedy jumper. Lord Ranald was given some strong work with llounslow, and sprinted homo the last half-mile in fair time. As usual, he was lame on pulling up, but this had worked off before leaving tho course. He is to take his place in Saturday's field. Fresh Bree2e was allowed to stride over about a mile, moving very freely. He will be ridden iii tho Hunters' Plate at Waslidyko by J. Burgess, and should bo handy at the right end. Billy Boy and Full Measure were allotted a strong working gallop. The latter went right away from his mate over the last four furlongs and has freshened up considerably since coming to Riccarton. He is expected to play an important. part in his coming hurdle engagements. Lancer, assisted for part of the journey by Gay Jim, ran a mile and a-quarter in comparatively good time. Ho has not had any recurrence of his old knee trouble during tho winter to date, in spite of the fact that he has done a lot of jumping over big fences. A rider has not yet been secured for him for Saturday's engagement. Shatter was given his first sprint since his holiday, accompanying Topthorn over the last three furlongs of a smart half milo along tho back. Ho has developed into a much more uolid gelding than when last raced and gives every sign of reaching high handicap class during the new season. Riding engagements have been inado aB follows for Saturday J. Burgess.—Fresh Breeze. A. E. Ellis.—Snowfall, Some Acre. . G. Salt.—The Babe, Deportment, Royal Land. D. NOTES IFROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP The jockey T. Green is leaving for Sydney by the Maunganui to-day. Green is going across to ride Inflation in his Australian engagements. The lightweight jockey W. J. Broughton left Wellington by the Monowai on Tuesdny on his return to Melbourne after spending a week in New Zealand. He will ride for L. Kobertson's stable. The rising two-year-old colt by High Art from Baby Doll, in A. Cook's stable at Te Awamutu, ha.s been named Impasto. The youngster is a half-brother to Royal Ruler and he is shaping very satisfactorily in his preparation for next season's racing. The three-j'ear-old Aga Khan, formerly trained by M. J. Carroll, is now being prepared by C. Jackson at Hawera. Aga Khan is a good stamp of gelding by Chief Ruler and he had a reputation when raced in Auckland, where hi 3 best performance was to wiu in. novice company at To Kuiti. Great Emblem, who went amiss in the autumn, is to rejoin the regular brigade at Elierslie next week. Great Emblem was blistered and turned out for a time after going lame, but he has been doing Bome work on the ronds lately and is in K""'d order to go ahead with a preparation. The Emblematic gelding should be a payable proposition this season if k<;eps sound, as he stays on fairly well. Referring to the amalgamation of the two racing clubs in Gisborne. Mr. J. W. Isolan said at the annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club list week that the arrangements had been finalised and racing next season would be carried out on the Poveity Bay Club's course. The Having Conference bad granted the Poverty Bay Club eight days for tho new season, so that there would be no loss of racing days in the district. PILLOW FIGHT - AT WORK Mr R A. McLean's recent purchase. Pillow Fight was given his first work on the track at Takanini yesterday, being allowed to cover a cirr-uit at a steady pace. He is a very big raking horse, s^tan< dmg over a lot of ground, and, although not yet strongly muscled, he has apparently done a, fair amount of solid work. He should fnrni=h into a commanding horse as a thrce'itrST*\fthfjasy whUe 6 going C a Mendy P°nce. Cg»H r Ss ht *hj, n tS?S ig B guitablo.
