SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS

'AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARS [TWO LEAVING FOR CAMBRIDGE Two successful students of Auckland University College,' Messrs. D. P. Costello and' G. C. Maclaurin, who have been awarded post-graduate scholarships in arts, will leave by the Maunganui to-day en route for England, to continue their studies at Cambridge. Mr. Costello, a son of Mrs. M. and the lale Mr. Costello, of Devonport, is only 20 years of age: He entered the Auckland Grammar School in 1923, with a Rawlings aiid a Junior National Scholarship, and two years later he won-a Senior National Scholarship. In the .following year Mr. Costello passed the matriculation examination, and in 1927, he was second in the Dominion in the University Entrance Scholarship examination. He was too young to accept the scholarship, but at the same time he won the Lissie, Rathbone Scholarship in English and history. In 1930, Mr. Costello graduated 8.A., also winning the Latin and Greek senior scholarships, and last year he graduated M.A., with first-class honours in Latin and Greek. He will continue his studies at Clare College, Cambridge. Mr. Maclaurin is the only son of Mr. ®nd Mrs. K. C. Maclaurin. of Revnuera. He received his secondary education at the Hamilton High. School, and at the 'Auckland Grammar School, where, in 1927, 'he gained a University Entrance Scholarship, and became a student at Auckland University College. In 1930, ha was awarded the Sir George Grey Scholarship, which he relinquished on winning the University Senior Scholarship in applied mathematics. In. 1931, Mr. Maclaurin completed his studies at, the University College, obtaining his M.A. degree with first-class honours in mathematics, and being awarded the Cook Prize for special excellence in that subject. He has been elected to a Colonial Exhibition at St. John's College, of which his.uncle, the; late Dr. R. C. Maclaurin, was a distinguished Fellow.
