WINTER SHOW MATERIALS
SALE OF TIMBER AND IRON KEEN BIDDING AND HIGH PRICES A spirit of enthusiasm was evident at the City Markets yesterday, when a large quantity of building materials employed in the construction of the temporary structures at the Auckland Winter Show was offered at auction by Messrs. J.Jones, Limited. It was stated by a member of the firm, which has conducted similar sales over since tho inauguration of the exhibitions, that never previously has the bidding been keener. A remarkably large crowd of buyers was in attendance, farmers from the Waikato and as far south as tho King Country making the trip to the city especially to be present at tho sale. Approximately 75.000 feet of timber was offered, the majority of which was medium kauri. This wood- was chiefly used in the buildings at the show, as, beside being an easy timber to work, it is easily resaleable. In addition to the timber, of which there was a, large range of sizes, 1250 sheets of corrugated iron, 600 ft. of Cornell board, 500 ft. of galvanised water-piping and four New Zea-land-made rugs were submitted, all of which wer>3 quickly disposed of. In some cases, nearly tho new price of tho timber was reached, the scantling, which predominated, realising 18s 6d to 22s 6d per 100 ft., the heavier sizes bringing as much as 26s 6d. Tho prices for rough boards ranged from 21s 6d to 233 6d, and flooring boards brought from 23s to 265. Tho timber* was sold chiefly in lots of 200 ft. Wailboards sold at from 2s 9d to 3s 3d, while corrugated iron, which was put up in lots of 20, realised correspondingly high figures.
