MISSION BAY
Sir, —Every Aucklander with any respect for the historical interest of Mission Bay, and any person with an appreciation of simple unadorned beauty, will endorse what Mrs. Cluett has written concerning tho proposed "improvements" in this quarter. Of course tho City Council can usually be depended upon to do something fatuous, but it seems sad that Auckland residents should be so ceaselessly engaged in a losing fight over the vulgarisation or defacement of one or another of this city's beautiful surroundings. As a beach, Mission Bay is perfect of its kind, and one cannot help thinking that practically all the proposed alterations are superfluous and impertinent.. If there is some erosion where the grass meets the sand at tho fringes of the bay, surely a low unobtrusive wall, like the one originally intended, would meet any present or future need. The idea of a "promenade" at this particular part of tho beach is a ghastly one. The judicious planting of trees would of course make the present green sward more attractive; but one is credibly informed that the old eucalyptus and other harmless trees (with the exception of the Norfolk Island, pines, which are being spared) are to be cut down. Incidentally, the City Council's ideas of "beaut ification" are hopelessly out of date, so far as this particular matter is concerned. A. Gladys Kernot. Kohimarama.
