ORDERS ON COMPANIES

THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY " LEGISLATION UNWARRANTED " The view that merely a nominal charge was warranted for the acceptance of orders by dairy companies, and not a figure ranging up to a maximum of per cent as requested by the National Dairy Association, was expressed yesterday at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. It was decided to send a letter to the Minister of Agriculture on the subject, stating, among other things, the following:— "If it is granted that some payment should be made to a dairy company in this connection for its services, it is suggested that a nominal flat charge per order should amply compensate the company for its services. The proposal to bring in special legislation for the benefit of a special class, namely, the dairy companies, is not only wrong in principle, but it will prove a hardship to all suppliers issuing orders for forward payments, for the reasons that it will curtail credit now freely given for all necessary farm requirements, and will curtail financial assistance by way of loan by all lenders apart from Government departments. "The council of this chamber considers that not only is the proposed charge excessive and the proposed legislation to give effect to it unwarranted, but that, if such legislation is passed, though it may possibly result in some considerable benefit to the dairy companies, it will strike a further serious blow at the dairy industry generally."
