AUSTRALIAN GOLD BUYER PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT "FIRST AND LAST VISIT" Stated by the police to have had convictions in Australia, Maurice Kaganski, goldbuycr, of Australia, aged 33, was ordered to bo deported when ho appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Kaganski was charged with landing in New Zealand, being a prohibited immigrant, and stealing broken-up gold and jewellery, and £3O in money, to tlie total value of £SO. the property of Emily Mary Kaganski. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said the charge of theft was a consequence of privatelyiaid information which came into the hands of the police. The informant now wished to withdraw the count. This, the police were prepared to agree to, provided the costs of £6 incurred were paid. Counsel signified that the amount would be paid. Mr. Kelly said Kaganski was an Australian criminal. Counsel: The accused is returning to Australia to-morrow. This is his first visit to New Zealand, and no doubt it will be his last. "We will be better without him," commented Mr. Kelly. The charge of theft was dismissed, for want of prosecution. Answering the magistrate, Mr. Kelly said the Emily Mary Kaganski mentioned in the charge was not the accused's wife, but his sister-in-law. Addressing the Court on the second charge, Mr. J. Mcintosh, collector of customs, said Kaganski arrived in New Zealand by the Maunganui on July 12. He travelled second-class in his own name, and commenced business as a goldbuyer. In March, 1931, the accused was convicted and sentenced to two years for breaking and entering, but he was discharged on special licence shortly before last October, when he received a six months' term for breaking and entering and attempted theft. The magistrate made a deportation order.
