STUDENTS' PLAN
beating the depression SELF-HELP AND CHANCE Chance will play a more than ordiuaril? important part, in the future of several final-year students in the faculties of architecture, science and engineering at the Sydney University. They have drafted an agreement under which each will pay Is a week into a fund out of which State lottery tickets will be purchased. The winnings (if any) will be placed in a special bank account. If at the end of 10 months the prizemoney exceeds a certain figure, the students will buy a ketch in which they intend to sail to England. They anticipate that the voyage, if it is undertaken, will last, about a year. They will endeavour to trade or obtain jobs at each port of call. A camera man from the University Film Society and a journalist will be included in the party. A former sea captain has agreed to act as navigator, and the medical officer will be one of the final-year medical students, who will graduate afc-the end of the year, "Even if the prize-money fail? to reach the specified figure," said one of the promotors recently, "an endeavour will be made to finance the trip. New graduates have little hope of securing positions, as those of even four and five years' standing are still out of work, especially in the engineering and architectural professions.
