YOUNG MAORI'S DEATH
FAREWELL NOTE LEFT VERDICT OF SUICIDE RETURNED [IIY TELEGRAM —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAKATANE. Tuesday An inquest was held by the coroner, Mr. G. A. Brabant, at Ruatoki, concerning llio death of Tahiri Aukuhata, aged 18. Taumutu Ereatara stated while ho was passing Waikirikiri on Sunday afternoon ho heard two shots fired. Tahiri came to a fenco and called out, "Good-bye." lie then fell down and was dead when witness reached him. Constable McDonnell, of Taneatua, stated that ho found deceased dead with a gun fixed to a hedge and with a pieco of string tied to Ihe trigger. Ho found tlio following note: —"Farewell, my dear people; farewell, dear heart; dear brothers and sisters, I bid you good-bye. I bid you farewell with the kiss of death." Ilineauripo Aukuhata, wife of deceased, stated that she and her husband had quarrelled and wero living apart, but they used to meet secretly at night. Sho could not account for her husband's action. A verdict of suicide was returned.
