TRANSPORT EMPLOYEES

SENIORITY AGAIN RESTORED ECHO OF A 1917 STRIKE A direction has been given by the New South Wales Minister for Transport, Mr. Bruxner, to the Transport Commissioners to restore to railway and tramway employees who refused to participate in the 1917 strike all their seniority rights and privileges. This is the fourth time they have reverted to their former status. On October 1, 1931, the then Premier, Mr. Lang, instructed the Railway Commissioners and Tramway Management Board to arrange to remove the disabilities imposed upon members of the railway and tramway staff who participated in the 1917 strike and to restore seniority to the men on th& basis of length of service, fitness and other necessary considerations, eliminating entirely the strike factor. This direction deprived certain members of the staff of advantages which accrued to them under legislation passed by the Bavin Government in 1929. The present Minister for Transport states that arrangements are to be immediately made by the Board of Commissioners to place all employees in respect of grade, seniority and pay in the positions they would now occupy if the 1929 legislation had not been disturbed by Ministerial direction.
