REPAIRS TO CABLES.
WORK FOR THE RECORDER.
FAULTS IN TWO LINES. After three and a-half months' work lifting tho New Zealand end of the Syd-ney-Wellington cable and relaying it with the New Zealand end at Muriwai, tho cable steamer Recorder will arrive at Wellington from the Tasman Sea today to take in stores and replenish her bunkers. Before the vessel returns to Auckland she will repair a fault in the cable which was lifted and relayed, and she will also carry out repairs to the Norfolk Island-Sydney cable near Norfolk Island.
The Recorder will/ leave Wellington early next week, but it is not certain whether she will proceed direct to Norfolk Island or complete the repair work in the Tasman Sea first.
When the Recorder was landing the shore end of the cable at Muriwai on April 17, the vessel's whaleboat, which was being used for the work, capsizod, and one of the crew was drowned. The boat was afterwards brought to Auckland and repaired at Devonport. It is being forwarded to Wellington by the Wingatui, which will leave Auckland to-day.
