SYDNEY DOCKYARD.
MORE ACTIVITY URGED.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER
SYDNEY. July 12.
A deputation which interviewed the acting-Minister of Customs. Mr. J. A. Perkins, sought the aid of the Federal Government in increasing the activities of the Cockatoo dockyard, Sydney, thus providing more work. The speakers suggested that an effort should bo made to break down the United States legislation under which American liners were not allowed to undergo repair in Australia in addition to receiving large subsidies to the detriment of Australian and New Zeajand shipping. The Minister reminded the deputation that the loss at Cockatoo dockyard last year was £52,000, but to close it was unthinkable. He promised to lay the representations of the deputation before the Federal Cabinet.
