NAUTILUS IN ARCTIC.

ENGINEER'S ASSERTIbN.

TEN MINUTES' SUBMERSION,

ADELAIDE, July 12,

Mr. J. Jansen, engineer on the American motor-ship Sawokla," which has arrived at Adelaide, described the attempt of Sir Hubert Wilkins to reach the North Pole in the submarine Nautilus as the " sorriest mess" he had ever been in.

Mr. Jansen was second engineer on the Nautilus. He said that for four weeks before the day on which the plunge under the ice was mado, the men on board knew that Sir Hubert did not intend to make a serious attempt to reach his objective. " Every man on the vessel was scared," said Mr. Jansen. "We all knew of the poor condition of the submarine. We had lost the stern diving rudder, but regardless of this, Sir Hubert ordered us to dive. We made a dive successfully, but stayed under the ice only 10 minutes. " That was the only time the ship was a submarine from the time we left America. Out of a crew of 30 only six were qualified submarine men," said Mr. Jansen.
