YACHT RACING.

PRESENTATION OF CUP.

NEW TYPE OF SAILING BOAT.

BY SPINDRIFT

The Akarana Yaclit Club will hold its annual distribution of prizes and dance on Saturday evening. Among the trophies to be presented is the Balokovic Cup, won by Mr. H. J. C. George's Victory. The race for this cup brought out five starters and was sailed over a course of 180 miles. Very severe weather was experienced, all the competitors being compelled to seek shelter, only Victory and Waione completing the course, which was the longest set for any ocean yacht race in New Zealand.

Madame Balokovic, who presented the cup while on a visit to Auckland last year in the schooner yacht" Northern Light, stated in a letter to the Akarana Club last week that the schooner was expected to reach New York this month. The letter was written on board the vessel in the Aegean Sea, and, according to Madame Balokovic, the yacht had encountered very bad weather in the Mediterranean Sea. Mr. S. Hainlin has resigned the office of secretary and treasurer of the Panmure Boating Club after 18 years' service. He was recently presented with a set of -pipes and a smoker's outfit by the members of the club in appreciation of his valuable work during his term of office. Mr. A. T. Pressor's motor-boat Maibe is being fitted with a bridge deck and other improvements. Plans of a new 14ft. type of boat to be known as the " Wakatere one-design sailing class" have been produced by Mr. J. Brooke, of Devonport. The design provides for smart-looking and safe little craft, the total cost of which is only £B. Six boats are already in the course of construction, and, according to the numerous requests for plans, it is anticipated that a very large number will be built before the season opens. Although the class is intended for boys, the boats will be suitable for adults to sail or race in. They will be Bermudian rigged and will carry the letter W on the mainsail.

The Richmond Cruising Club has decided to add another storey with a balcony in front to its cluhb'ouse on Sloane's Beach provided the plans meet with the approval of the Marine Department. The Auckland office of the department has passed the plans, but before the work can be started the department at Wellington must also agree to them. The money for carrying out the alterations to the clubhouse ha 6 been provided by the art union recently promoted by the club.
